EMDR Therapy

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach that is effective in supporting individuals to process distressing memories and alleviate symptoms associated with trauma, anxiety and other emotional difficulties. EMDR is considered clinically effective for survivors of trauma, those who experience anxiety, panic and/or phobias, chronic pain (where there is a psychological component) and sexual concerns such as performance anxiety, erection difficulty and painful sex.

Is EMDR Therapy Right For Me?

The effectiveness of EMDR is supported by numerous research studies and is recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and American Psychological Association (APA) as an effective therapeutic tool for the treatment of trauma, anxiety, phobias and grief. EMDR Therapy is considered clinically effective for people who are experiencing any of the below symptoms or conditions:

  • Trauma Survivors

  • Anxiety, including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, and phobias.

  • Chronic Pain: EMDR may be incorporated into the treatment of chronic pain, especially when there is a psychological component or trauma history contributing to the pain experience.

  • Sexual concerns such as performance anxiety, erection difficulty, pornography and sex dependence or addiction, and painful sex.

What Is Involved in EMDR Therapy?

EMDR therapy follows a structured approach which begins with history-taking, establishing a therapeutic relationship, nervous system education and resourcing and treatment planning. The processing phase of EMDR includes the use of bilateral stimulation (either using eye-movement, bilateral tapping, use of a vibrational hand device, sound or drawing). This processing phase targets specifically distressing memories, thoughts and/or physical sensations, and works to desensitise by reducing or removing the intensity and emotional charge of such memory/thought/feeling.
